What is editing?

After you’ve written and revised your book, it should be reviewed by a professional editor. We offer both developmental and copy editing.

How much does editing cost?

The fee depends on your book’s word count and style. We ask for a two-page sample and the book’s approx. word count before quoting. A typical 40,000-word book costs around £399 (developmental editing) or £375 (copy editing).

How long does editing take?

Editing usually takes 2-4 weeks, depending on the length and style of your manuscript, so please build this into your publishing or submission timeline. A faster turnaround may be possible (this can incur a fast-track fee).

How do I know which one’s right for me?

Developmental editing is an early-stage review of your book’s structure, plot, characterisation dialogue and pace. It ensures the story is engaging, consistent and well-structured and is especially helpful for first-time authors or those needing clarity. It can also be relevant for those writing memoir or non-fiction.

Copy editing focuses on refining your book for accuracy, clarity, and consistency. It covers grammar and punctuation, while also checking facts, description and formatting and identifying any repetition.

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is the final check before typesetting, picking up any inconsistencies in spelling, grammar and layout.

Formatting your book

Formatting (typesetting) prepares your book for publishing by setting the book size and fonts (paperback), layout and spacing, adding images, tables and front/back matter. We supply both PDF (for paperback) and EPUB (for ebook) files, as requested. 

How long does it take?

Formatting usually takes 2-3 weeks, depending on the length and style, so build this into your publishing schedule. A faster turnaround may be available (this can incur a fast-track fee).

How much does formatting cost?

The formatting fee depends on word count and complexity. So, for example, whether the book contains images, tables, appendices, etc. We ask for a two-page sample and the book’s approx. word count before quoting. Fees range from £110–£190.
